My vegan friend tried her first plant-burger from McDonald’s today and proudly showed off her pic on Facebook, with a “finally” caption. But I don’t get it.
McDonald’s has a shitty track record when it comes to the care and compassion of animals, the wider environment, their staff, and the farmers who produce their raw ingredients (not just animals). So is their plant-based initiative really a good thing for the planet?
Yes, you may have saved one cow on that one day, but does that change the wider picture? Is it time we thought a little more holistically about what it means to be a guardian of the planet? A lot of energy and forest-clearing farming must go into turning those non-burger ingredients into a burger.
Which is “better”, an ethically raised beefburger or a non-ethically created plant one? I don’t know the answer, but it’s worth thinking about.
